Kenslow Knoll - Peak District Walk

Tuesday 9th December 2008

As the forecast was good I planned a short walk that would enable me to explore a place I hadn't been to before, Kenslow Knoll. What I hadn't expected was to have such good views from the top of the knoll which in part explained the very leisurely lunch I enjoyed there.

Start: Friden car park (SK 1723 6074)

Route: Friden car park - Bolderstone Plantation - Long Dale - Gratton Moor - Kenslow Wood - Kenslow Knoll - Friden car park

Distance: 5.5 miles     Ascent: 218 metres      Time Taken: 3 hours 10 mins

Weather: Blue sky but cold.

Pub Visited: None    Ale Drunk: None

Bolderstone Plantation

Heading through Bolderstone Plantation towards Long Dale.

Bolderstone Plantation

The frozen ground certainly meant the going was much better than it would normally have been.

Long Dale

The route went along the top of Long Dale, instead of through it.

Long Dale

Looking across Long Dale from the point where I turned towards Gratton Moor.

Gratton Moor

Gratton Moor, not very moor-like is it!

Black Nursery Plantation

Looking back to Black Nursery Plantation from the track to Kenslow Wood.

Kenslow Wood

Kenslow Wood is a private wood but the track above it is very pleasant.

An unusual sight greeted me opposite Little Rookery Farm.

Toposcope

Just as I approached the toposcope on Kenslow Knoll this helicopter came across the valley.

Stanton Moor

Looking towards Stanton Moor and Anthony Hill from the toposcope.

Anthony Hill

Kenslow Plantation

Kenslow Plantation where the toposcope can be found is a Millennium project.

A final look back at Kenslow Knoll as I reach the road to the car park.
