Little Yarlside - Lake District Walk
Sunday 30th October 2016
We took advantage of the the extra hour in bed to do a short out and back walk to Little Yarlside on our way to the Kirkstile Inn.
Start: A6 Shap Road (NY 5535 0653)
Route: A6 Shap Road summit - What Shaw Common - Little Yarlside (383) - What Shaw Common - A6 Shap Road summit
Distance: 3.75 miles Ascent: 250 metres Time Taken: 2 hours 25 mins
Terrain: Boggy moorland
Weather: Overcast with the clouds descending.
Pub Visited: Kirkstile Inn, Loweswater Ale Drunk: Cumbrian Legendary Ales, Grasmoor Dark Ale
After a short ascent we get our first view of the route. Our target for today is Little Yarlside, the summit in the middle of the shot.
Before we get there we have to go over What Shaw first.
Once we reach the summit we get our first view of Crookdale. What Shaw's actual summit is the other side of the fence but we did that four years ago so we don't need to scramble over the fence.
Our route to Little Yarlside will follow the clear path on this side of the wall. Four years ago when we had planned on visiting this summit we had followed the path on the other side of the wall and found ourselves unable to visit the actual summit.
As we start the descent of What Shaw we get our first view of Robin Hood on the other side of the valley.
At the head of the valley Lord's Seat is visible and for a brief moment it looks like it might be about to brighten up.
The true summit of Little Yarlside is finally 'bagged'. If time had allowed we would have continued onto Great Yarlside and Wasdale Pike but as there was only an hour of daylight left we opted for an out and back walk this time.
As we reach the summit blue sky appears over Wasdale Head, sadly it doesn't last long and behind us the higher summits are disappearing into the clouds.
Looking towards What Shaw as we start the descent from Little Yarlside.
Before we began the ascent back over What Shaw we grabbed a late lunch looking over Crookdale towards High House Bank.
